New methane slip system approved

Daphne Technology’s SlipPure had previously been granted approval in principle for its plasma-only configuration but now runs its full plasma-catalytic process. This is said to enable very high methane slip reductions at exhaust temperatures well below those required for catalyst-only solutions, making it ideal for marine engines.

Daphne Technology says it is the only company which has developed a plasma-catalysis system for methane slip reduction. “This advanced system integrates our patented wavelet pulse power supply technology to generate plasma and utilises our proprietary catalyst, ensuring unmatched performance and efficiency,” said the company.

Also approved in principle by DNV, SlipPure has undergone extensive testing using exhaust gas produced from a land-based test engine (746kW lean burn spark ignited engine type RR MTU 8V4000M55RN) at the Maritime Center of the University of Applied Science in Flensburg, Germany.

In January 2023, safe operation of the WPP power supply was demonstrated over nearly 75 hours of operation. Earlier this year, the plasma-catalytic process was evaluated over nearly 100 hours of operation, with LR witnessing 4.0 g/kWh removal of methane slip (62% methane slip reduction at 75% load) from exhaust gas at temperatures as low as 380°C.

Daphne Technology says the plasma-catalysis system significantly enhances the efficacy of SlipPure. Key benefits include reduced power consumption and the ability to operate at lower exhaust temperatures typical of marine engines.

“It is clear that Daphne Technology’s plasma-catalytic technology is moving the bar in helping companies meaningfully mitigate methane slip in the maritime and land-based oil and gas industries,” said Panos Mitrou, Lloyd´s Register Global Gas Segment director.

The next version of SlipPure is currently being manufactured for deployment in November 2024 with a US oil super-major, reports Daphne Technology.
