Keel laid for NewMax hybrid ferry

The methanol-ready Stena Future is one of two newbuilds that will play a key role in Stena Line’s transition to more sustainable fuels.

“Investing in new ships prepared to run on alternative fuels as well as electricity is an important part of our strategy of moving towards new sustainable fuels and setting new industry standards.”

The new ferries will significantly increase capacity on the Belfast-Heysham route on the Irish Sea.

Besides being able to run on methanol, the vessels are equipped for both electric propulsion as well as connecting to shore power where available.

The keel laying of the second of the two NewMax vessels, whose name is yet to be revealed, is planned for this autumn. Both will launch on the Irish Sea in 2025.
