Wärtsilä to supply greener propulsion package for James Fisher tankers

The contract, booked in Q2 2024, furthers Wärtsilä’s aim in delivering efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for the maritime industry. The ships are under construction by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng Co. in cooperation with design consultant FKAB Marine Design.

At the heart of the propulsion package lies the Wärtsilä 25DF dual-fuel engine. This technology allows operators to switch between LNG and conventional marine fuels, significantly reducing emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter. This flexibility ensures compliance with evolving emission regulations while optimizing fuel costs based on availability.

Beyond the 25DF engine, Wärtsilä’s scope of supply includes a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, a gas valve unit (GVU), gearbox, controllable pitch propeller (CPP), seals, bearings, and their recently updated remote propulsion control system with enhanced ProTouch technology. This package ensures optimal performance, ease of use, and improved situational awareness for crews.

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for 2025. This project is an example of Wärtsilä partnering with shipbuilders and operators to drive the maritime industry towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
