This trial follows an earlier experiment conducted on Parkkade in late 2019 and early 2020 but differs in scale and setting. Cargow’s vessels have a greater energy demand than those in the initial trial, and the test took place at an operational terminal rather than a public dock, showcasing the concept’s potential in a real-world, high-demand environment.

The battery containers, supplied by Zero Emission Services (ZES), are already known for powering inland vessels. This pilot signals a potential new revenue model for ZES, extending their innovative battery solutions to shore power systems. The moveable batteries offer a flexible, mobile alternative to fixed shore power connections, particularly in locations where grid infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

The trials allowed market participants to test and refine the integration of various technological components, both onshore and aboard vessels. Additionally, optimising the logistics behind the moveable battery concept proved to be a critical aspect of the project. While technically feasible, the cost of deploying moveable shore power solutions is currently higher than that of traditional shore power connections, meaning it may only be viable at locations without reliable access to grid electricity.

The pilot was supported by government subsidies through the National Air Quality Cooperation Programme, aimed at improving air quality in urban areas. Coordinated by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam, the project is part of ongoing efforts to explore the broader application of moveable shore power concepts. These systems are particularly promising for locations where grid connections are not yet available or where flexible, temporary power solutions are needed due to grid congestion.

As the industry continues to explore sustainable technologies, moveable shore power systems could play a key role in reducing emissions and supporting energy transitions in ports worldwide.
