Damen delivers first of three combi freighters
The vessel, named MV Arion, set sail on its maiden voyage, transporting cargo from Southeast Asia to Europe.
Upon arrival in Europe, the MV Arion will enter a charter agreement with Amadeus Schiffahrts- und Speditions, a subsidiary of HGK Shipping, and will be renamed Amadeus Pearl.
The CF 3850 represents Damen’s latest evolution in short-sea cargo vessels. Combining the company’s decades of experience with cutting-edge design, the CF 3850 offers optimised performance for efficient and sustainable operations. This is the first time Damen has delivered a vessel to Reederei M. Lauterjung and the first ship built as part of Damen’s new partnership with the Ba Son Shipyard in Vietnam.
Damen’s cooperation with Ba Son was initiated to expand the shipyard’s capacity and meet the increasing demand for cargo vessels. In addition to the MV Arion, Damen is constructing seven more CF vessels at Ba Son, two of which will also join the Reederei M. Lauterjung flee
Following the successful delivery of MV Arion, Damen and Reederei M. Lauterjung signed a new contract on October 18th for a fourth CF 3850 vessel. This new ship will be built at Damen’s Yichang Shipyard in China and will feature a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency. The vessel is designed to operate on biofuels and is hybrid-ready, allowing future conversion to full-electric operation with minimal downtime.
Damen’s commercial director for cargo vessels, Remko Bouma, expressed his enthusiasm about the project: “We are pleased to deliver the first vessel Damen has built for Reederei M. Lauterjung. This CF 3850 is also the first to come out of our cooperation with Ba Son Shipyard in Vietnam. It demonstrates that the CF 3850 design can be constructed to our high standards across different shipyards.”
Reederei M. Lauterjung managing director, Kay Lauterjung, praised Damen for its punctual delivery and high-quality standards, stating, “We are very pleased with the vessel’s performance on her maiden voyage. The collaboration between our teams, both in Vietnam and with Damen, has been very positive, and we look forward to continuing this partnership.”
Damen’s collaboration with Reederei M. Lauterjung has proven mutually beneficial, with the German shipowner providing valuable feedback to refine the vessel’s design. The latest CF 3850 order reflects this evolution, with enhanced sustainability features that align with the shipping industry’s push for greener operations.
