HMM trials shore power in South Korea

According to HMM, the newbuild vessel HMM Emerald switched to shore power in December 2024 to demonstrate the potential for achieving zero-emission operations while berthed at Gwangyang Port.

The vessel is equipped with an electric circulation steam system (ECSS), which enabled the ship to completely shut down its boiler during AMP usage, allowing for emission-free operations. HMM stated that this trial resulted in a reduction of around 16 tonnes of GHG emissions compared to business-as-usual scenarios.

HMM has installed AMP systems on approximately half of its container fleet, with usage steadily increasing at key ports, including Busan, Shanghai, and Los Angeles.

Delivered by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in May 2024, HMM Emerald forms part of HMM’s fleet of twelve LNG-ready 13,000 TEU containerships. These vessels were constructed under a 2021 shipbuilding contract, with six vessels each built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean. They feature advanced energy-saving technologies designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. The final vessel in this series, HMM Turquoise, was delivered in November 2024.

Last year, HMM also added two LNG-powered 7,700 TEU containerships to its fleet, chartered from Greek shipowner Navios.
