Bureau Veritas celebrates delivery of LNG bunkering vessel for Seaspan Energy

The newly delivered vessel boasts advanced technological features, including dual-fuel operation, a state-of-the-art DC power distribution system, and twin Type C cargo tanks. The vessel is also equipped with azimuth thrusters for main propulsion, dual compressor systems for handling boil-off gas, a sub-cooler unit to maintain tank pressure, and three manifold stations to enhance flexibility during bunkering operations. The project underscores the importance of trusted partnerships in meeting the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental responsibility, ensuring the successful delivery of critical infrastructure for transition fuels.

Certification of LNG bunkering vessels plays a vital role in enabling shipowners and operators to achieve regulatory compliance while supporting the growing demand for LNG as a cleaner marine fuel. As the industry intensifies its decarbonisation efforts, LNG offers a practical transition fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. BV, leveraging its extensive expertise in LNG, has classified approximately 35% of the world’s bunkering ships in service and around 50% of the current order book. This expertise is now being applied to inform the development of other low-carbon fuels such as methanol and ammonia.

Alex Gregg-Smith, senior vice president for Asia Pacific at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, highlighted the long-standing partnership with CIMC SOE: “We’ve had a long-standing partnership with CIMC SOE, known for their innovation in specialised shipbuilding, including cargo tanks, topside modules, and small-scale liquefied gas carriers. This final delivery of three 7,600m³ LNG bunkering vessels is a great example of our shared dedication to driving sustainability and supporting the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.”

Shen Lintao, deputy general manager of the Shipbuilding Division at CIMC SOE, emphasised the meticulous efforts behind the delivery of the S1067: “After numerous meticulous adjustments and strict inspections, the S1067 is the fruit of the close cooperation and joint efforts of the company and its partners. Since the launching ceremony on 1 July, all team members have painstakingly refined and worked tirelessly, demonstrating CIMC SOE’s outstanding technical strength and innovation capabilities, as well as the spirit of cooperation.”

Harly Penner, president of Seaspan Energy, expressed gratitude for the collaboration: “Seaspan Energy attaches great importance to the valuable cooperative relationship established with CIMC SOE. We will cherish the three LNG bunkering vessels delivered by CIMC SOE and ensure that these vessels always maintain the good condition they were in upon delivery.”

BV has previously worked with CIMC SOE on significant projects, including three 16,500m³ LPG carriers and six 27,500m³ LNG dual-fuel carriers. Future collaborations include innovative projects such as two 12,500m³ LNG bunkering vessels, two 24,000m³ liquefied ethylene gas (LEG) carriers, and the new SPP40 Platform supply vessels.
