Hybrid SOFC propulsion partnership announced

The agreement, announced at Nor-Shipping 2025, aims to create a highly efficient, low-emissions propulsion solution for 174,000 cubic metre LNG carriers.

The project will focus on combining HHI and HD KSOE’s proprietary SOFC and variable frequency drive (VFD) technologies with LR’s regulatory and technical guidance. The hybrid system promises improved fuel efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced operational flexibility compared to conventional marine propulsion.

Sung-Gu Park, president – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register, said the collaboration underlines LR’s leadership as a decarbonisation partner. “By working together on high-impact projects, we help the industry advance toward sustainability without sacrificing performance,” he said.

Chang Kwang-pil, senior executive vice president of HD KSOE, emphasised the project’s strategic importance. “This JDP highlights our leadership in low-carbon propulsion, and it’s especially meaningful that it incorporates our proprietary SOFC and VFD technologies, which are essential for future-ready shipping solutions,” he said.

Ryu Hong-Ryul, chief technology officer and executive vice president of HHI, added, “This initiative is a critical milestone toward zero-carbon fuel technologies for large LNG carriers. It balances sustainability goals with the real-world needs of shipowners and charterers.”
