Stena’s new hybrid ferry completes trials

The Stena Futura, which is set to join the Belfast-Heysham route later this summer, underwent a series of trials designed to test all aspects of the vessel’s systems, including engine performance, fuel consumption, navigation, emergency systems and overall manoeuvrability.

“It is with great excitement that we announce that Stena Futura has successfully completed its sea trials,” said Niclas Mårtensson, chief executive of Stena Line.

“The Irish Sea region continues to be a booming market for Stena Line, and the significant boost these ships will provide to our freight capacity on the popular Belfast–Heysham route will be welcomed by the market.”

Once operational, Stena Futura and its sister vessel Stena Connecta will increase freight capacity on the route by 40%, addressing growing demand for transport between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

In addition to expanding capacity, the hybrid ships mark a step forward in Stena Line’s environmental strategy. Built-in technologies allow the vessels to operate on both battery propulsion and shorepower where available, supporting the company’s carbon reduction goals.

“These vessels represent a crucial step in our broader sustainability journey,” added Mårtensson. “By integrating battery propulsion and shore power capabilities, we are making significant strides towards our goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, reinforcing Stena Line’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping.”

The Stena Futura is on track to enter service in late summer 2025.
