DAF revolutionises inland waterways propulsion
At the heart of the Mannheim’s propulsion system are five powerful PACCAR MX-13 engines supplied by DAF Components. Together, they deliver a combined 2,650 hp (1,946 kW), boosting performance while cutting emissions.
Compared to similar vessels with traditional propulsion, the Mannheim is reportedly 30% more fuel-efficient and produces five times less NOx.
“This solution offers major benefits,” said Peter van der Heijden, director of NPS Driven. “The PACCAR MX-13 engines are incredibly efficient and only run when needed. On top of that, using HVO fuel slashes CO₂ emissions by up to 90%.”
Developed in collaboration with Dutch marine engineering firm Vink Diesel, the powertrain was commissioned by Rhenus Partnership, a subsidiary of the Rhenus Group. The vessel will operate between southern Germany, Antwerp and Rotterdam.
Each PACCAR engine powers a generator, which supplies energy to two electric motors driving the ship’s propellers. The intelligent power management system adjusts engine use based on load and direction of travel, further optimising fuel usage and emissions.
“With this revolutionary powertrain, we needed the cleanest, most reliable engines available,” said Robert Graf-Potthoff, technical inspector at Rhenus.
“DAF’s PACCAR MX-13 engines were the clear choice and also require far less maintenance than standard marine engines.”
Equipped with a battery system and a hydrogen-based auxiliary power source, the Mannheim’s engines can be temporarily powered down for emissions-free operation in ports and when passing urban areas.
