Terntank expands wind propulsion fleet

With this order, the total number of vessels equipped with VentoFoils rises to five, totalling 20 of the 16-metre foldable wind-assist units. The first of the tankers, Tern Vik, was delivered in April 2025 by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou).

“At Terntank, we are always looking for ways to reduce fuel consumption,” said Claes Möller, chief executive of Terntan.

“The installation of the VentoFoils and their integration with the Kongsberg system went seamlessly. It’s great to see that the actual fuel savings match what was predicted.”

All five vessels feature Kongsberg’s integrated energy and propulsion management system under the K-Sail concept, allowing wind to lead propulsion when conditions are optimal. Supported by battery packs and dual-fuel engines running on methanol or diesel, the ships aim for zero-emission operations in alignment with IMO 2050 goals.

The VentoFoils, which are ATEX-certified and designed to fold for port safety, have demonstrated strong performance in early use, reinforcing confidence in wind-assisted propulsion as a viable decarbonisation tool.

Econowind has now sold over 130 VentoFoil units across various vessel types, signalling growing industry momentum for wind propulsion solutions.
