Baleària launches bioLNG-powered fleet
Since the beginning of September, the Margarita Salas, Abel Matutes and Rusadir have been powered exclusively by bioLNG – a renewable fuel derived from livestock waste – and will continue sailing emissions-free until at least December 2025.
“The use of bioLNG on our regular routes represents a real and verifiable step forward in our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions,” said Georges Bassoul, chief executive of Baleària.
“The investments in our fleet that we have made in recent years to equip it with dual engines allow us to use this renewable fuel, which prevents the release of greenhouse gases and accelerates decarbonisation.”
The company has secured 132 gigawatt-hours of bioLNG, representing 13% of the LNG consumed by Baleària’s gas-powered fleet in 2024. This move eliminates CO2 emissions on the Barcelona–Alcúdia–Ciutadella and Malaga–Melilla routes, with an expected savings of 80,300 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to removing 153,500 cars from roads or planting more than 160,000 trees.
Baleària also made headlines as the first European ferry company to obtain the ISCC EU sustainability certification, which verifies the traceability and environmental impact of its renewable fuels.
Combined with other initiatives such as shorepower-enabled vessels such as the Margarita Salas, and the Green Maritime Europe label, Baleària is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable maritime transport.
