Two more small gas-fuelled ferries for Norway

The two ships are due to enter service in January 2016, and Boreal will operate them for the Finnmark County Council on the Øksfjord -Hasvik , Øksfjord -Tverrfjord and Øksfjord- Bergsfjord – South Tverrfjord routes.

The 62.6m long, 13.5m wide ferries will carry 100 passengers, and will be powered by 1,340kW gas engines, of a make and type not yet specified. They are to a design by Multi Maritime, designated MM 55 FC LNG.

LNG fuel was chosen for environmental reasons, and because Finnmark is a major gas producing area of Norway. “We are very pleased to be the preferred partner at this ferry connection”, says Kjetil Førsvol, chairman of Boreal Transport Nord. “Fiskerstrand has previously built four ferries for us, the latest being delivered in January 2014. We have very good experience with the yard, and we wish to repeat the success. We aim Norwegian yard and quality.”
