Enhanced onboard air purification from the Netherlands
One project the company was involved with involved a major upgrade to a former tug, which was being transformed into a 36m superyacht-style vessel intended for polar expeditions. As well as replacing the utilitarian tug trim and furnishings with luxury items designed to offer unlimited comfort, as well as sound insulation and fire protection, the ventilation system needed a re-think.
The problem was, basically, that when operating the new purpose-designed HVAC systems – and during polar exploration that means virtually all the time – smells from the diesel plant and sewage tank spread throughout the accommodation and over the decks.
Adtim solved this by installing two dedicated air purifying systems based on smart plasma technology, one for the HVAC system and one for the air outlet of the sewage treatment plant. The air purifier for the HVAC has a capacity of 1,800m³/h, the sewage plant purifier is smaller, at 755m³/h.
With this active filter technology, the company claims that 100% of the odours, bacteria and germs are removed from the air. A useful side effect of this is that people with asthma or allergies benefit considerably.
The air purifiers are based on similar plasma technology to that used in cooker hoods. Accoding to Adtim, this is well-proven, having been in use since 2006 in many thousands of domestic cooker hood units. Adtim believes this system is highly suitable for use on board ships as the system works with recirculated air, meaning no outlet ducting is required. This, says the company, saves a considerable amount of space for piping and eliminates the cost of installing extra ductwork.
