IPS mobile ferry upgrade

The Birkenhead-based business carried out car deck improvements to class requirement on the Stena Adventurer operating between Holyhead and Dublin.

Paul Smith from IPS said: “It is the first time we have delivered this sort of work for Stena, although we do have a track record in this specific area.”

Corroding fans and air vents are a common problem for operators. But they form an important component helping to control and remove dirty substances and are particularly important in areas such as car decks, in order to tackle exhaust fumes.

The IPS engineer’s first job was to assess the condition of the fans and then cut a hole in the existing chamber creating better access for the ship’s crew.

They then sectioned-off one of the ten fan uptake units and took away the existing fire flaps for the vent uptake made of mild steel and replaced them with 316 stainless steel to give the structure greater strength and durability.

Critically they also modified the air-flow system to make it more efficient by replacing a spindle mechanism attached to the new fire flap allowing the device to be operated automatically or controlled from the bridge.

Due to the success of the project IPS engineers will now begin work on a second fan.
