Wärtsilä hails LNG carrier progress

The company reported that the dual-fuel 34DF – with a power output range from 3,000-10,000kW at 500kW per cylinder – has around 70% market share of auxiliary engines on LNG carriers. In the first half of 2014 the company recorded 56 orders for 14 new vessels being built by four different owners.

Wärtsila has already received nearly 100 orders from the three main South Korean shipyards since the 34DF was relaunched.

“While the success has been universal, with contracts from yards and owners globally, the fact that the world’s largest shipbuilding nation, South Korea, is increasingly opting for the Wärtsilä 34DF is especially gratifying,” said Lars Anderson, vice president, engine sales at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

The Wärtsilä 34DF was originally introduced in 2008 and was upgraded in 2013 to provide 11% more power and increased efficiency without changing the physical dimensions.
