Hyundai develops high pressure SCR system
The HP SCR, the fruits of an eighteen-month research and development project, can reduce emissions by up to 99% and therefore complies with IMO NOx Tier III requirements which came into effect in January 2016.
To comply with the latest limits on NOx emissions while running on conventional two-stroke engines either an SCR or exhaust gas recirculation (ECR) system must be used.
SCRs can be low or high pressure systems; the difference being where the reactor is located. In a high pressure system it is between the engine exhaust valves and the turbocharger turbine inlet, providing a compact and efficient system without compromising engine performance or impacting fuel consumption.
Hyundai’s earlier low-pressure SCR for a large engine – developed in 2012 – required operation on marine diesel (MGO) containing sulphur of 0.1% or less as fuel.
A further advantage to the new system is that it can run on heavy fuel oil that costs half as much as marine gas oil.
HHI has five orders placed for its HP SCR with the first installation, in a 20,600m3 LPG carrier, planned to take place in February.
