Nordnorsk Shipping commissions LNG feed carrier
Nordnorsk was impressed with an earlier NSK Ship Design, the MS Høydal, the world’s first gas-fuelled cargo ship which is used in aquaculture to transport salmon feed.
The design firm has already been working on the Havfarm project, praised by former Minister of Fisheries, Elisabeth Aspaker, as being an important step in the development of Norwegian aquaculture technology.
Thomas Myhre, sales manager at NSK Ship Design, said: “We’ve got a lot of experience and expertise in the field of LNG propulsion, and projects like this let us show that solutions are out there.”
“The use of gas-fuelled cargo ships is an important step in bringing down greenhouse gas emissions, leading the way for the transport and aquaculture industries,” he added.
The new NB1070 design reduces NOx emissions by over 90% and CO2 emissions by approximately one quarter compared to traditional diesel engines. The ship is 81.50 metres long and 16 metres wide, has a cargo capacity of 2700 tonnes of feed and is equipped with a 50-ton crane.
Also on board is a dynamic positioning system provided by Rolls Royce, allowing the vessel to unload without mooring.
Nordnorsk has signed with Tersan Shipyard in Turkey to build the vessel and completion is expected in 2018.
