Rolls-Royce LNG engine for feed carrier

As reported the vessel, which will deliver fish food to Norwegian fish farms on behalf of BioMar Group, was designed by NSK Ship Design and is under construction at Tersan shipyard in Turkey. It will be a slightly larger sister ship to NSK Shipping’s Høydal, also designed by NSK Ship Design, which was the world’s first LNG powered cargo vessel when it was delivered from Tersan in 2012.

Rolls-Royce will provide an eight-cylinder Bergen C26:33 natural gas engine rated at 2160kW, a Promas combined rudder and propeller system, one bow and one aft tunnel thruster and the automation and DP system. A Rolls-Royce hybrid shaft generator will use the main engine to generate electricity for the ship, and can act as an alternate power source should LNG be unavailable.

Bergen engines use spark plugs for ignition, rather than diesel, with the B- and C-series emitting around 22% less CO2 (including methane slip) than a diesel engine. NOx emissions are reduced by 90% and SOx emissions are negligible.

The 81.5m long vessel will be able to carry 2.700 tonnes of fish food. It is expected to be delivered from Tersan in 2017.
