USCG tests for Alfa Laval PureBallast

The new testing, which follows the USCG decision late last year to disallow the most probable number (MPN) sample method, will enable Alfa Laval to submit a new application for US type approval.

The company noted that the rejection of the MPN method did not disqualify UV-based systems, or necessitate any change in the PureBallast system.

Stephen Westerling Greer, global business manager for PureBallast, said: “Alfa Laval has both a robust biological disinfection technology and a system with AMS [temporary Alternate Management System under USCG] approval. We are fully convinced of PureBallast’s ability to meet the USCG criteria, so what remains is to demonstrate it according to the USCG’s preferred method. This we are doing quickly in order to support our customers.”

No system, UV or otherwise, has yet received USCG type approval, despite the rules being in effect since 2012. Several suppliers are expecting to pass tests towards USCG approval later this year, while IMO type approved systems will be required a year after the decisive ratification of the organisation’s Ballast Water Management Convention.
