Maersk installs Hydrocurrent waste heat recovery
The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system can generate electrical power from low-temperature heat sources, including main engine jacket cooling water at around 85°C.
The installed version has an output of 125kW, reducing the load on the ship’s main generator and reducing CO2 emissions.
The debut installation follows tests on a pilot ORC machine at Calnetix’s factory last year, which resulted in approvals from ClassNK and Lloyd’s Register.
A white paper produced by Calnetix Technologies explores the new technology in depth. It can be read here.
