GE supplies PTI/PTO system for Maersk newbuilds

The 19,630 teu containerships will accommodate the systems – comprising two drives, two induction motors and a power management system – in order to increase fuel efficiency and operational flexibility. The shaft generator motor, installed between the engine and the propeller, can either generate electricity from the rotation of the propeller shaft or contribute to propulsion using stored electricity. Surplus energy generated can be used to power onboard systems and equipment.

GE noted that its system differs from counterpart PTI/PTO systems in that is equipped with induction motors instead of synchronous motors. The absence of transformers enables a simpler design improving reliability and reducing capex. The induction motors are also arranged to minimise maintenance and (along with fuel savings) reduce opex.
