WSS to market ballast water sampling unit
The handheld device is said to provide a rapid indication of the efficacy of ballast water treatment(BWT) – whether treated water meets the DD2 standard specified in the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention. The test involves no chemicals and results are provided in under a minute.
Ballast-Check 2 is a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer, measuring fluorescence emitted by algae in the 10-50um size range. It is already widely used by water quality authorities and supplements WSS’ existing testing solutions for E Coli and Enterococci bacteria.
Rune Nygaard, business manager, WSS Water Solutions, said: “The BWT segment is still in its infancy and the industry needs to build understanding about systems, and their on-going effectiveness, to ensure compliance with this important new regulation. The IMO and US Coast Guard are yet to announce an approved measurement methodology, but as both organisations are investigating the use of fluorometry for indicative measurements it makes sense to follow this lead.”
The system will be launched as part of the WSS product range at SMM Hamburg on 6-9 September, with units available for inspection on the company’s stand in (B5.432).
