MAN launches high-pressure SCR unit

MAN's new high-pressure SCR unit, enabling Tier III NOx compliance with a reduced footprint for two-stroke engines

The company noted that the MAN SCR-HP unit for two-stroke engines was based on its established high-pressure SCR system for medium-speed engines. The size of the unit has been reduced drastically compared to others on the market and an integrated mixing unit has also been included.

The MAN SCR-HP is available for two-stroke engines of all bore sizes and is available in six frame sizes, accommodating up to 25MW per reactor. MAN said it expects to deliver the first system at the start of 2018.

Daniel Struckmeier, head of exhaust after-treatment and Plamen Toshev, project manager SCR-HP development, engineering four-stroke, MAN Diesel & Turbo, noted: “The successful technology transfer from medium-speed design to two-stroke is this project’s major achievement. The reactor design has been driven by the desire to reduce the SCR system’s overall size, while still maintaining the effectivity of a much larger design.

“Reaching this target was only possible by focussing on key cornerstones of the design – the honeycombs as well as the reactor concept. For both components, we have collaborated with worldwide stakeholders to ensure that we offer the best possible design to the market.”

The development was introduced at an event in Tamano held with MAN licensee Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding. The system’s approval certification and engine shop-test was carried out at Tamano Works with Mitsui, under observation by class society ClassNK.

Dirk Balthasar, head of turbocharger sales, explained that the compact design, compared to conventional reactors, leads to considerable benefits for engine builders, shipyards and ship owners. “Especially the Scheme B approval will lead to remarkable cost reductions in the engine-approval procedure,” he said.
