Solvang rolls out EGC+EGR emissions solution
The vessel’s exhaust is scrubbed of SOx and then around 25% of the gas is recirculated to reduce NOx production. Tor Øyvind Ask, Solvang, told delegates at a CIMAC Circle event at Nor Shipping that the configuration will enable Clipper Harald and the new vessels to comply with the global sulphur cap while running on heavy fuel oil. With a bigger fan than the current EGR – enabling 35% of the gas to be recirculated – the set-up will meet Tier III NOx limits.
The four 21,000m3 vessels, to be built at Hyundai Mipo in South Korea, will have EGC+EGR on the main engines, while the auxiliaries will meet NOx limits with selective catalytic reduction. Ask noted that the company had tried to install shaft generators on the newbuilds but had ultimately been unable to accommodate them. The ships will be delivered one a quarter throughout 2019.
The company will continue to hone the system ahead of its installation on the newbuilds, said Ask. Among other developments, Solvang will aim to automate part of the extensive cleaning process necessary for scrubbers and EGR units.
Ask described the company’s recent progress in the project, started in 2015, at the CIMAC Circle event at Nor Shipping in Oslo this week.
