ABB launches engine speed optimising system

Optimising the rotational speed of generator sets using Dynamic AC could save a large cruiseship up to 2,000 tonnes of fuel a year, ABB claims

Dynamic AC (DAC) adjusts the rotational speed of diesel generating sets, allowing the system frequency to vary within a specified range. “Currently, many ships still run with their generators at a set speed, regardless of the power requirement, creating a surplus of wasted energy,” the company noted.

Aimed at ships with a power requirement of 20MW and above, the medium voltage power system is engineered for variable frequency, including component design and system integration. Distribution for the auxiliary and hotel loads is provided by frequency converters or directly from the variable frequency system.

ABB noted that a large cruise ship could save up to 6% (or up to 2,000 tonnes of fuel) annually by engine speed optimisation. The simple configuration uses existing and proven ABB components.
