Al Shelila: Milestone for Chinese LNG carrier construction

This 175,000 cbm vessel, the first in a series of six, represents one of the most advanced LNG carriers constructed in China, featuring cutting-edge technology for efficiency and emissions reduction, including an optimised hull form, twin-skeg design, high-efficiency propellers, and air lubrication systems.

As global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) grows to secure energy supply, LNG carriers have become critical assets. Developing the expertise and infrastructure to deliver such complex projects in a highly competitive market requires robust collaboration among stakeholders. The Al Shelila is a prime example of this collaborative effort, incorporating advanced technology and expertise from across the maritime sector.

The vessel integrates a range of innovative features, including two WinGD 5X72DF-2.1 engines equipped with Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER) technology to minimise methane slip, a GTT Mark III Flex membrane cargo containment system with a boil-off rate of 0.085% per day, and two shaft generators to enhance energy efficiency. Jiangnan Shipyard’s proprietary Intelligent Ship System (JNIS) enables real-time energy optimization, ensuring operational efficiency.

Speaking at the delivery, Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics and Services, emphasized the significance of Al Shelila as a symbol of strength and grace, reflective of the UAE’s maritime heritage. He highlighted the deepening industrial ties between the UAE and China, underscoring the role of this partnership in meeting the growing global demand for natural gas and driving economic growth. Captain Al Masabi also commended DNV’s technical expertise in delivering this state-of-the-art vessel.

Jiangnan Shipyard’s chairman, Lin Ou, expressed pride in completing the vessel two months ahead of schedule, citing it as evidence of Jiangnan’s leadership in the global gas carrier market. He reaffirmed the shipyard’s commitment to delivering the remaining vessels in the series on schedule and at the highest quality standards, further strengthening strategic cooperation with ADNOC.

DNV – Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen highlighted the importance of collaboration among shipowners, shipyards, and industry stakeholders in achieving success in the technically demanding LNG sector. He praised the seamless coordination between ADNOC, Jiangnan, and DNV, attributing the project’s success to the collective expertise and commitment of all involved.

Norbert Kray, DNV’s regional manager for maritime in Greater China, noted the challenging nature of the large LNG segment and celebrated the team’s ability to meet ambitious timelines while maintaining compliance with stringent class rules and industry standards. He pointed to the promising future for Chinese-built LNG carriers as evidenced by this milestone.
