Alfa Laval introduces 0.5% sulphur scrubber
PureSOx Global will complement the existing PureSOx ECA, which scrubs exhaust to the 0.1% sulphur limit allowed in emission control areas. A further extension to the range, Pure SOx Flex, will enable operators to switch between compliance with ECAs and the global cap.
The entry into force date of the global cap could be decided at the next meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in October. Alfa Laval noted that it first introduced PureSOx ahead of the implementation of ECAs, from 1 January 2015, and was now doing the same for its global version. The cap is expected to enter into force from either 2020 or 2025.
René Diks, manager marketing & sales, exhaust gas cleaning, said: “Scrubbers are the proven route to compliance, whereas the costs and infrastructure associated with LNG remain uncertain. For owners or operators of a big fleet, now is the time to start investigating options and to consider gaining experience with a first scrubber installation.”
Alfa Laval has a PureSOx operating base of 70 installed systems. All versions will be available in open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid arrangements, with either U-design or inline I-design scrubbers. All are intended to provide payback after a maximum of three years, even considering a smaller difference in price between 0.5% and 0.1% sulphur fuels than between 0.1% sulphur fuel and heavy fuel oil.
Alfa Laval will introduce the expanded PureSOx platform at at SMM in September (hall A1, stand A1.226).
