Canada’s first dual-fuelled combo carrier launched

The Damia Desgagnés will be powered by a Wärtsila 5RT-flex 50DF, with a power output of 5,540kW, capable of burning LNG, heavy fuel oil or marine diesel oil. Classed by Bureau Veritas, the 15,100dwt vessel will hold the ‘Cleanship Super’ notation, indicating that its ballast and grey water treatments meet strict standards, and that it can operate for seven days without discharging effluents or residues.

The Damia Desgagnés is the first of four tankers four the Desgagnés fleet, all to be powered by dual-fuel engines running primarily on LNG. Louis-Marie Beaulieu, chairman and CEO, Desgagnés, said: “The Damia Desgagnés is part of an extensive investment program for the renewal and expansion of the Desgagnés fleet with vessels fitted with cutting-edge technology, which demonstrates Desgagnés’ commitment and confidence in its future.”

The new tanker is said to offer a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions, 85% reduction in NOx and near elimination of SOx and particulate matter when running on LNG. It holds the supplemental notation ‘Green Passport’, certifying that the construction materials have been recorded and will be re-certified every five years to ensure safe manipulation and disposal during maintenance, recycling and ship breaking.

Damia Desgagnés is propelled by a four-bladed variable-pitch propeller of 5.2m diameter, with a 750lW bow thruster and a 550kW stern thruster providing manoeuvrability. Auxiliary power is provided through two generators of 1,480kW and one supplying 1,110kW. The vessel is Polar 7 certified, allowing it to navigate in ice-laden waters.
