Chinese order for PM shaft generator

The equipment – which generates electricity for use across the ship by harnessing the power of the propeller shaft – is to be delivered to the shipyard from May 2016. The orders follow contracts over the past two years for vessels being built at Tianjin Xingang (four vessels for Wallenius Lines), Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding (four vessels for Terntank Rederi) and Besiktas in Turkey (two vessels for Transport Desgagnés of Canada).

Active front-end low harmonic drive technology makes the shaft generator efficient across the full vessel speed range. This feature is particularly prominent during electrical part loads, the normal load for any ship.

In power take out mode, electrical power is generated by the two-stroke main engine instead of the less efficient auxiliary generators. The reduction in operating hours on the auxiliaries leads to significant maintenance savings, WE Tech claims.
