Under a strategic agreement Total will supply gas fuel for the vessels for 10 years from their delivery in 2020, as well as potentially providing marine lubricants for the ships. The company is examining the long-term charter of a barge capable of refuelling the 18,600m3 fuel tanks, as well as serving other LNG customers in Europe.

“The entire maritime industry will benefit from the new supply chains that will be created,” said Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO, CMA CGM. “By combining the expertise of two French companies, each one leader in its field, we are consolidating France’s prominent role for a more sustainable transportation and in favour of the energy transition.”

The companies also reached an agreement in principle on the potential supply of lubricants for the nine newbuilds.

Olivier Jouny, CEO of Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions, noted: “With this one deal, which accounts for about 75% of the emerging LNG bunker market, Total is now a major player. The market is diversifying and Total intends to be a supplier of both fuels and services.”

CMA CGM and Total previously signed a cooperation agreement in February to examine the most environmentally responsible propulsion solutions to meet the International Maritime Organization’s impending sulphur cap.

Futher design and specification details about CMA CGM’s new orders can be read in The Motorship’s recent feature, which notes that Total was expected to win the LNG supply deal.
