CMA CGM electrifies in Nike deal

This innovative initiative features a fully electric barge, powered by batteries, and supported by a charging infrastructure connected to a new solar farm at the Gemalink deep-sea terminal.

The e-barge will transport goods between Binh Duong and Cai Mep, covering a 180 km round trip. The project aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, preventing an estimated 778 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.

CMA CGM is collaborating with Nike, which will use the e-barge to move products from Binh Duong Province to Gemalink. This partnership supports CMA CGM’s broader ambition of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and underscores its commitment to decarbonising the maritime sector.

“This project reflects our dedication to reducing our environmental impact while providing our customers with sustainable transport solutions,” said a spokesperson for CMA CGM. “By partnering with Nike, we are demonstrating the practicality of electric barge transport and helping to create a greener supply chain in Vietnam.”

The initiative strengthens CMA CGM’s ties with Vietnam and Southeast Asia, fostering local economic growth through more sustainable and resilient supply chains. It also forms part of the company’s ongoing efforts to minimise its environmental footprint and provide innovative solutions for its customers.
