Compact ballast water system unveiled

The new PureBallast 3 Ultra’s footprint has been significantly reduced, giving designers more freedom to fit it into increasingly crowded machinery spaces. Just as important is the reduction in piping and the more streamlined system integration, both of which are meant to shorten installation schedules and lower costs.

According to Anna Wieslander, head of Alfa Laval PureBallast, customer experience shaped much of the redesign. “Its development is the result of targeted R&D and close dialogue with our customers,” she said.

“We believe this solution is exactly what the market needs, both in terms of environmental technology and serviceability to ensure BWMS compliance.”

The system features a built-in ‘cleaning-in-place’ function, which replaces manual cleaning routines and helps cut downtime. The system is also prepared for remote monitoring, a feature that has become more important as ships and service teams rely more heavily on digital diagnostics.

The PureBallast 3 Ultra is being produced at Alfa Laval’s factory in Qingdao, a move the company says helps shorten lead times for shipyards in China and across Asia-Pacific.

While the ballast water treatment market has seen relatively little technical evolution in recent years, Alfa Laval is betting that a smaller, easier-to-handle system will resonate with both builders and shipowners who want compliance without added design or operational burdens.
