Construction begins for Tallink LNG fast ferry
Tallink’s 212m, 49,000 tonne ferry will use LNG as a fuel and will comply with the new and stricter emissions regulations for the ECA areas including the Baltic Sea. It will feature an innovative hull to minimise the hydrodynamic flow resistance, which together with other innovative solutions is expected to significantly improve energy efficiency.
“The environmental performance and many innovative solutions in the technical and service areas will be benchmarks for the market and also our shuttle service in general,” said Janek Stalmeister, CEO, Tallink Group.
“With the new Tallink fast ferry we are taking the next step in the technical development of the LNG ferries – all tailored to the specific needs of our customer. For the Turku yard, this order boosts our production volume in 2016 by 30% above the 2015 level,” added Jan Meyer, CEO, Meyer Turku Oy.
ABB will supply the complete electric power plant, electrical propulsion systems and energy management solution for the ferry.
Finally, Wärtsilä has been selected to power the ferry with three 12-cylinder 50DF and two 6-cylinder 50DF main engines, as well as two fixed-pitch propellers and propeller shaft lines.
The ferry will operate in the Baltic Sea between Helsinki and Tallinn. The ship has a capacity of 2,850 passengers and will be delivered at the beginning of 2017.
