Containerships Nord completes maiden LNG bunker at Rotterdam
The first bunkering was carried out at lay bay berth in a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation from Shell’s Bunker Vessel, the Cardissa. Around 240 tonnes of LNG was bunkered.
Containerships has contracted Shell to provide Containerships’ LNG vessels with ship-to-ship bunkering at the Port of Rotterdam. Shell will use Shell bunker vessels, including the Cardissa, to provide the bunker services.
In future, the bunkering will be carried out at a normal operational berth simultaneously with loading and discharging operations. This means no disadvantages in operative efficiency will occur compared to traditional oil burning vessels.
The Containerships Nord was delivered to Containerships from Wenchong Shipyard, China on 12 December 2019. A further three vessels are expected to be delivered in the first half of 2019.
The 1,400 TEU capacity container ship is powered by a dual-fuel WINGD 7X50DF two-stroke engine. The vessels have endurance of 14 days with LNG and will be bunkered once per roundtrip during their regular service loop between Containerships’ ports in the North Sea and Baltic.
During regular service, the vessels are expected to operate using LNG alone, as part of Containerships’ strategy to create an integrated LNG based door-to-door supply chain in Europe. Containerships also invested in 17 LNG-fuelled container trucks in the Netherlands in November 2018.
