Corvus batteries for Wightlink ferry

Wightlink's hybrid ferry will employ Corvus' Orca Energy lithium-ion batteries when it enters service in 2018

As reported, Wärtsilä was selected to supply a power and propulsion package for the new ferry, which will enter service between the Isle of Wight and the British mainland in 2018.

The ferry’s power system will make use of batteries in conjunction with four six-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 generating sets controlled by a 690v main switchboard, an integrated automation system and a power management system also supplied by the Finnish company.

Corvus noted that using the Orca ESS solution for the hybrid power and propulsion systems will improve efficiency, reduce the exhaust emissions and lower noise levels.

“This new environmentally friendly ferry represents our third major vessel project with Wärtsilä and we are pleased that the safety, reliability and performance of Orca ESS is being recognised,” said Halvard Hauso, executive vice president sales & marketing, Corvus Energy.

Corvus offers two variants in the Orca line. Orca Energy is intended for applications that require large amounts of energy over a relatively long period, such as ferries and merchant vessels, while Orca Power delivers a high power output for applications that need strong dynamic response, such as offshore vessels, tugs and port equipment.
