Corvus Energy to power BC Ferries’ electric vessels
The vessels, based on Damen’s Road Ferry 8117 E3 design, are scheduled for delivery by 2027 and will expand the British Columbia operator’s Island Class fleet, which already includes six hybrid-electric ferries.
Each of the four new ferries will be fitted with a 2,034 kWh Corvus Orca energy storage system, totalling over 8 MWh of battery capacity. The Orca ESS, widely used across more than 700 maritime vessels globally, is known for its high performance, fast-charging capabilities and advanced safety features. The electrical integration of the systems will be led by Dutch firm Royal Van Der Leun.
Designed to operate entirely on battery power using shore-based renewable energy, the ferries will produce zero emissions during electric operation. They are intended for routes between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, and Campbell River and Quadra Island, carrying up to 390 passengers and 47 vehicles.
The order supports BC Ferries’ strategy to cut corporate emissions and reinforces its position as a frontrunner in sustainable ferry operations. Ed Hooper, executive director of Shipbuilding at BC Ferries, said the new vessels are expected to deliver significant annual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions across the two routes.
Corvus Energy, which originated in British Columbia and maintains a major presence in Richmond, continues to build on its established relationship with BC Ferries. “We are proud to support BC Ferries and Damen Shipyards in this next step toward greener ferry operations,” said Tor-Gunnar Hovig, head of region–Americas at Corvus Energy.
