COSCO to build Wärtsilä BWMS
Under the agreement, which takes effect today (1 June), Wärtsilä will provide technical support to WECOSCO who will manufacture the system under license for applications on ships across the global marine market including the parent group COSCO, which operates a number of shipyards in China and has one of the largest shipping fleets in the world.
The system will be supplied with type approvals obtained by Wärtsilä (from IMO and under the US Coast Guard’s alternate management system scheme).
Joe Thomas, director, ballast water management systems, Wärtsilä Ship Power, said: “This is a landmark agreement forming an important new partnership, which facilitates supply to a significant part of the Chinese marine market.
“By combining the strengths of our two companies, we can more effectively meet the growing demand for EC-based BWMS in the short term and for medium to large vessel applications.”
Jia Lianjun, chairman of WECOSCO board of directors, added: “By combining the strengths and giving full play to the advantages of both companies, we have achieved a win-win cooperation.”
The agreement has an initial five-year term.
