The partnership, running from May 2025 to July 2026, aims to create a streamlined, digitally enabled production system that integrates technologies such as digital twins and smart quality assurance tools into HMD’s manufacturing lines.

LR will provide technical guidance and independently verify the implementation and performance of these systems.

“This initiative is poised to deliver a smart, transparent quality assurance framework for HMD’s future smart factory,” said Sung-Gu Park, president – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register. “It will enhance efficiency, reduce variability and increase traceability in the production of these critical components.”

Hyung Kwan Kim, chief executive of HD Hyundai Mipo, added that digitalisation will lead to more consistent, data-driven quality certification, fostering greater trust among shipowners.

The deal comes as demand for Type C tanks grows, driven by the shipping industry’s shift toward alternative fuels and carbon capture solutions.

By embedding digital tools into the heart of production, the collaboration seeks to reduce construction time, improve consistency and enhance safety.
