The vessels, Waalvliet and Rijnvliet, have been purpose-built to deliver a balance of cargo efficiency, structural robustness and operational flexibility.

Each vessel measures 98 metres in length and is designed to handle a broad spectrum of cargo types, including bulk, breakbulk and containers. With a deadweight of approximately 4,200 tonnes, the coasters feature a cargo hold fitted with a tween deck, a moveable bulkhead, and pontoon hatch covers. This configuration enables operators to optimise stowage and respond quickly to varying cargo requirements.

The ships are fitted with a fuel-efficient diesel-electric drivetrain and are designed to accommodate future propulsion upgrades. This future-proof approach supports both Hartel Shipping and Holland Shipyards Group’s strategic goals of minimising environmental impact while maintaining high standards of logistical performance.

The double christening ceremony for the multipurpose newbuilds took place at the shipyard in Werkendam on April 17, 2025.

The newbuilds are part of a new series of shortsea coasters commissioned by Hartel Shipping & Chartering. The order for a total of three identical sister ships was placed back in December 2022.
