ExxonMobil launches LNG bunkering
The move expands the company’s marine fuel portfolio with lower-emission alternatives, including LNG and bio-LNG.
“Both LNG and bio-LNG can help reduce lifecycle GHG emissions compared with conventional marine fuels,” said Amy Wood, ExxonMobil’s global lower emission fuel manager.
“As the maritime industry looks for scalable solutions to reduce GHG emissions, ExxonMobil is leveraging its skills and capabilities to deliver these fuel options.”
The company, with over 40 years of experience in the LNG value chain, will debut its first bunker vessel, chartered from Avenir LNG, in early 2027. A second vessel, from Evalend Shipping, is expected by late 2027. These vessels will enable ExxonMobil to supply both LNG and bio-LNG to marine customers.
In the interim, ExxonMobil is developing complementary supply solutions to serve customers ready to transition before vessel delivery. The company cites growing global demand and supportive policies as key drivers behind the timing of this initiative.
The LNG bunkering effort is part of ExxonMobil’s plan to invest up to US$30 billion in lower-emission solutions between 2025 and 2030, with the majority aimed at helping other companies reduce their emissions.
“We’re preparing for a multifuel future,” said Wood, “one that meets society’s energy needs while helping to reduce GHG emissions.”
