Faroese future-fuel ready live fish carrier
The 109.2m-long 22.2m-wide diesel-electric vessel features a combined tank capacity of around 7,000 cubic metres. In common with other recent wellboats, the vessel features a 700kWh battery pack, supplied by Corvus. Emissions at berth can be reduced by the use of the vessel’s shore power connection. Overall, the ship owner expects the vessel to deliver a 20% reduction in emissions compared with previous vessels.
Built by Turkish shipyard Sefine in Yakova, the Bakkafossur features a gearless propulsion solution, supplied by Brunvoll. The two Indar main generators of 2,000kVA have been specified with Cummins medium-speed engines, each rated at 1,400kW, giving a power concentration of 7,000kW.
The power delivered to 2 x 2 Brunvoll thrusters supports dynamic positioning, which will enable the vessel to service aquaculture cages located in the open sea when that enters the market.
The vessel’s design is intended to permit alterations to the fuel type in the future. The five diesel generators are placed in a deckhouse on the shelter deck for easy change to suitable 100% green generators when such technology becomes available.
This might facilitate the introduction of alternative green fuel storage without requiring ventilation system changes (for ammonia, for example). The engine room will also be positioned close by the storage tanks for the alternative fuel. The design, by Elsinore-based naval architects Knut E. Hansen includes capacity equivalent to16 teus space for the future storage of alternative fuels on top of the machinery deck house.
