First LNG-fuelled bulk carrier delivered
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and Ilshin Logistics produced the 50,000dwt bulk carrier, dual-classed by Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Korean Register. Measuring 191m loa and 32.26m beam, it will carry limestone between South Korean ports.
The ship is powered by a MAN B&W 6G50ME-C9.5-GI dual-fuel engine with an output of 7,550kW. The 500m3 Type C LNG fuel tank is made of austenitic high manganese steel and located on the aft mooring deck. The material, newly developed by POSCO, has a high manganese content (approximately 26%) and is specially designed for cryogenic LNG and liquefied gas storage applications.
The properties and characteristics of the high-manganese steel, as well as the required welding technology and fuel tank design, have been proven suitable for cryogenics. Lloyd’s Register provided certification of high manganese steel welding consumables, as well as welding procedure approval and material approval, in July 2017 after extensive development and testing.
