Harstad Havn in shore power launch

This development complements the existing shore power installations at Stangnes, reducing emissions and noise from ships in port while significantly cutting fuel consumption.

The facility enables vessels to shut down their engines and connect to the electrical grid while docked, providing a cleaner and quieter alternative to traditional fuel-powered operations. Plug Harstad—a joint venture between Harstad Havn and Plug Nord AS, each holding a 50% share—has invested approximately NOK 11 million in the project. The system is designed to supply electricity to smaller cruise ships and other vessels using low-voltage shore power. The project received NOK 2.4 million in funding from Enova, with the remaining investment covered by the owners.

As a key maritime hub in Northern Norway, Harstad Havn plays a crucial role in freight handling and passenger traffic. Over the past decade, the port has modernised its quay infrastructure to meet evolving customer needs, maintaining a strong environmental focus. With the addition of this latest facility, shore power is now available at three quays in Stangnes and one at Larsneset. The port’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through ongoing development projects at Rødskjær, aiming to support regional economic growth while minimising environmental impact.

Thor Mathiassen, head of operations and property at Harstad Havn, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: “The launch of shore power at Larsneset represents a significant step in our commitment to green energy solutions. By embracing shore power, we are reducing our environmental footprint while reinforcing Harstad Havn’s position as a leading sustainable port.”

Gunnar Hegstad, managing director of Plug Nord, also emphasised the benefits of the project: “We are pleased to have collaborated with local companies such as Harstad Elektro and Noranett to deliver this facility. We believe the people of Harstad will benefit from improved air quality and reduced noise in the port area. We look forward to furthering our partnership with Harstad Havn to realise its vision of becoming Northern Norway’s preferred port.”
