Integrated systems power autonomous ferry rollout
The new ferries launched in Fosnavåg on 6 February 2026, combine advanced vessel design, integrated vessel energy systems and automation to enable safer, more efficient crossings.

Integrated power
The autonomous ferry build programme aims to demonstrate how these vessels can operate reliably on a demanding commercial service through coordinated ship architecture, propulsion and control technologies.
HAV Group and its subsidiaries delivered the integrated autonomy solution, built around close interaction between purpose-designed ship architecture and advanced systems for energy, propulsion and control.
The company optimised the vessel design for energy efficiency, predictable performance and seamless integration of autonomous functions, while Norwegian Electric Systems supplied the vessel energy systems, electric propulsion, battery technology and a comprehensive control platform.
Together, these systems support automatic vessel control, fjord crossings, autodocking and collision avoidance.
According to HAV Group, the autonomy concept depends on the interaction between sensors, control, autodocking and safety functions rather than any single feature, enabling stable operation with minimal intervention.
Under normal conditions, the autonomous ferry fleet will be monitored and controlled from a shore-based operations centre.
