Jiangnan Shipbuilding receives AiP for LNGC with Type B tank design

The new LNG carrier design has a 79,800cbm capacity, and features Jiangnan Shipbuilding’s BrillancE Type B cargo containment system. The BrilliancE Type B containment system involves independent tanks fabricated from 5% nickel steel and employs multi-layer insulation panels and sophisticated leakage detection and mitigation measures.

The design was announced alongside the announcement of the completion of Jiangnan Shipbuilding’s first BrillancE Type B cargo containment system for a VLEC. The system is expected to be installed in the first of a pair of 99,000cbm VLECs that are under construction for Pacific Gas. As previously reported by The Motorship, the two vessels were originally slated for delivery by early 2022, and will transport ethane from the US to Europe on behalf of UK petrochemicals group INEOS.

The delivery of the first Type B tank and the first AiP for an LNG carrier design featuring a Type B containment system represent important advances by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, which is China’s leading yard in terms of research into gas carrier containment systems.

The development forms part of an increasing focus on the development of proprietary LNG technology for the two-stroke market at Jiangnan Shipbuilding’s parent group, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The Motorship reported in April that another CSSC subsidiary, Shanghai-based China Shipbuilding Power Group, had developed a proprietary electronic engine control system as part of the development of a new low-pressure Otto cycle dual-fuel engine.
