Klaipėda Port signs electrification contract for ferries

The initiative will eliminate the need for fuel consumption during port stays, replacing it with electricity from renewable sources.

Three electricity supply stations will be installed at Klaipėda Central Terminal, with an additional unit planned for Klaipėda Container Terminal. These facilities are expected to be operational by 2026.

The infrastructure work, which includes laying cables from transformer stations to the quays, will be carried out by UAB Vakarų Resta. The project forms part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainability at Klaipėda Port, with future plans to source electricity from renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

The initiative is partially funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which has allocated €8.6 million towards the total estimated cost of approximately €11 million. Additional electrification efforts for quays serving container vessels, cruise ships, and the port fleet are scheduled for completion by 2028. These developments are in line with European decarbonisation goals and will contribute to reducing emissions from maritime operations at the port.
