KR approves DSME LNG containment system
Solidus employs two metal barriers surrounding an insulation material developed in cooperation with Germany’s BASF Group. Claims for the system suggest that it will achieve a further reduction for LNG boil-off rates (BOR) to as low as 0.05%. The system is also understood to have a shorter ‘drying time’ than competitor systems, offering productivity and cost benefits during the newbuild process.
DSME has contributed experience gained as a leading builder of LNG carriers during the development of Solidus. DSME is testing Solidus further through R&D projects, while a potential newbuild scheme involving Solidus is under discussion.

The design approval for DSME’s Solidus follows shortly after Lloyd’s Register granted the company’s LNG cargo containment system general approval on 2 April 2019.
