Langh Tech scrubbers and water treatment for container vessels
The in-line scrubbers are multi-inlet installations, with main engine and auxiliaries connected to the same scrubber tower. The main engines are also equipped with EGR systems to reduce NOx emissions to IMO Tier III limits, which also employ the water treatment system provided by Langh Tech. The supplier is the first company to offer combined water treatment for scrubbers and EGR.
The combined water treatment for EGR and SOx scrubber requires high-quality purified water to be fed back to the EGR. The combined treatment saves space onboard and only requires one chemical compound, caustic soda (NaOH), to tackle both NOx and SOx emissions. This eliminates the use of urea, which is needed when SCR technology is used for NOx removal.
The water treatment technology is based on membrane filtration, which keeps the operational costs are kept low and compresses the waste produced into only small amounts of dry sludge. Membrane filtration also cleans overboard discharge water beyond MARPOL requirements.
Langh Tech received approval from MAN Diesel & Turbo to use its system to clean EGR process water in late 2016. The deal is Langh’s first for a newbuild from a Chinese yard.
