Lehmann Marine and Sunlight partner for maritime battery initiative
Sunlight Group, a member of the Olympia Group, has over three decades of experience in manufacturing advanced lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. As a global leader in motive power batteries for intralogistics, including electric forklifts and energy storage systems for on-grid, off-grid, and residential applications, Sunlight brings extensive expertise to this strategic partnership.
Under the agreement, Sunlight will acquire a 51% stake in Lehmann Marine, reinforcing both companies’ positions in the rapidly growing maritime battery market. This collaboration is aligned with the global drive towards sustainable shipping solutions, as the industry seeks to reduce emissions and enhance operational efficiency.
Alexander Lehmann, managing director of Lehmann Marine, emphasised the transformative nature of the partnership: “Partnering with Sunlight gives us a powerful ally to scale our production and meet the increasing demand for safe and efficient energy storage systems in the maritime sector.” Dirk Lehmann, also managing director of Lehmann Marine, added: “By combining our expertise, we will accelerate the development of innovative battery technologies that support the industry’s transition to sustainable operations.”
Labros Bisalas, CEO of Sunlight Group, highlighted the strategic importance of the investment: “This underscores Sunlight’s commitment to identifying high-value opportunities in the energy storage sector. By joining forces with Lehmann Marine, we are positioned at the forefront of the maritime battery market, which is set to experience substantial growth in the coming years.”
The global maritime battery market is projected to expand significantly by 2030, driven by the adoption of electric and hybrid propulsion systems aimed at reducing emissions and meeting international sustainability targets. Electrification in shipping is critical for advancing decarbonisation efforts, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations.
With their strategic locations near key maritime hubs in Hamburg and Athens, Lehmann Marine and Sunlight are well-placed to meet market demands and provide tailored energy solutions globally. Their combined expertise aims to deliver compact, reliable, and safe energy storage systems to support the shipping industry’s transition towards zero-emission operations.
The partnership will enable Lehmann Marine to expand its production capacity and accelerate the rollout of next-generation maritime battery solutions, addressing the evolving needs of shipowners and operators seeking sustainable propulsion alternatives. Bisalas expressed his gratitude for the trust shown by Alexander and Dirk Lehmann, stating: “We look forward to working closely together to drive innovation and growth in the maritime sector. Our shared vision of providing best-in-class energy solutions will help accelerate the transition to greener shipping.”
